AI, web and apps for Heathfield businesses
Heathfield sits at the top of the Cuckoo Trail. The High Street still has its butchers, greengrocers and cafes, and the farms and trades begin where it ends.
Heathfield
Heathfield grew up where the A265 meets the A267, about 16 miles from both Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, and its market goes back to a grant from Henry III. The High Street mixes independents with a few national names, the Gibraltar Tower stands in a corner of Heathfield Park, and around it all sit Old Heathfield, Cross in Hand, Broad Oak, Punnetts Town and Waldron.
The town has form for lucky finds. In 1896 the railway drilled for water at Heathfield station and struck natural gas, which lit the station for more than thirty years. Our reviews rarely strike gas. They usually find something duller and more useful, like the enquiry that sat unanswered all weekend.
The same railway took its nickname from the town’s April fair, where a woman would release the first cuckoo of spring from a basket. Train drivers called it the Cuckoo Line, and the track south to Polegate is now the Cuckoo Trail.
Wealden iron paid for the town in the 1500s and 1600s. Today the money is made by small firms, a handful of people covering every job: the shop, the builder, the farm with a holiday let, the gym, the club. Work arrives by word of mouth and by message at 9pm, and someone has to answer it without giving up their evening.

Beachy Head lighthouse
01We’re not getting enough leads.Be the light they steer by.
Word of mouth does the selling round here, but the message that arrives while you’re up a ladder in Cross in Hand still needs a reply; an AI agent drafts it, with the booking, for you to confirm.
Newhaven harbour
04We need an app. Yesterday. We ship.
Gyms, clubs and class-based businesses want bookings, plans and messages on their members’ phones, and the gym up the road in Burwash already has exactly that.
a lifeboat crew
06Our team can’t use AI.Train the crew, not just the boat.
With no IT department to ask, small teams need someone to show them, in plain English, what AI should and shouldn’t touch; we do it at your premises, on your own work.

Six miles east along the A265, in Kipling’s village of Burwash, is Barn Gym, our closest flagship. We built the system the gym runs on: booking with coach approval and automated waitlists, coach schedules, a 205-exercise library, a 120-meal database and a member community, which replaced a paid community tool. In the coach’s meal planner, AI drafts a full week of meals in seconds, and the coach decides what the member gets. The platform is now being turned into a product other gyms can use.

How we work
How we work with people in Heathfield
Heathfield is about 40 minutes from Seaford by road, and we’re happy to come to you, whether that’s the shop, the yard or the kitchen table. You can also come down to us in Seaford, or keep it to a video call.
The first conversation is the Free Business Review: a 20 to 30 minute call about what’s slow and what it’s costing you. Dan sends the written summary himself the following working day: the three fixes he’d make first, with a rough value against each.
Say the word and the price is fixed up front, and whatever we build belongs to you.
Once it’s running, we teach the people who will use it, at your place and on your own work. If you’d rather hand it over entirely, we can run it for you.
Email dan@danielnicholls.com. We reply within one working day.
Questions people ask
Questions people ask
Is an app realistic for a business our size?
Often, if the scope is clear. Barn Gym in Burwash runs its bookings, plans and community on a system we built, with an iPhone app on top. We’d start with the one thing your customers would use every week, ship that in weeks, and add to it once it’s earning its keep. The review is where we find that one thing, and the proposal puts a fixed price on it.
We work from a farm outside Heathfield. Is that too far out for you?
Not at all. Cross in Hand, Broad Oak, Punnetts Town, Waldron and the farms in between are all on our patch. If the job is better done on a video call, we’ll say so and save us both the drive. When we do visit, we’ll want to see how an enquiry arrives and where it goes next, so pick a normal working day.
What does AI actually do in a business like a butcher’s or a builder’s?
The repetitive writing. It drafts replies to enquiries, chases quotes that went quiet, writes the weekly post and keeps every customer conversation in one place. A person reads and approves anything a customer will see. It doesn’t make decisions on its own, and we set it up so it can’t.

Tell us what’s slow. We’ll tell you what to fix first.
A call of 20 to 30 minutes. We find the gaps, the leaks and the quick wins, and what each one is worth to you. Fixed price after that, no hourly rates. No 200-page deck.
Or tell us what you want to achieve and Dan will come back to you within one working day. Email dan@danielnicholls.com.
